If you didn’t make it up to the Winnett Winery to enjoy George Wallace, a New York City Beat
Poet, you missed a great evening.
Overlooking the vineyard, Tony-Joe and Bonnie opened the evening with music from the good ol’ days. Mediha Saliba and Tamara Jenkinson then read a selection of their poems before George Wallace
took the stage.
His first poem was “I’m Sorry For Being Late,” a poem he said he kept on hand in case he was late to an
event, as he was this evening. Making the long drive from San Francisco safely, and
appreciatively of our beautiful coast, he took a wrong turn and ended up in Hoopa. But
in true Willow Creek fashion everyone enjoyed themselves and the half hour delay became immediately worth it as George read
his poems with the rhythm and beat that offers his narrative a jazzy surreal quality.
Sipping Winnet wine and eating a delicious array of
Mediterranean appetizers, prepared by Beverly Bensky, listeners were transported with images, beat, and words. George Wallace’s
poetry was a rare treat for our local poetry enthusiasts, and to their delight he has promised to come again next year.
As the sun began to set, the evening concluded with Richard Parish singing
on guitar, and then Tamara on her hauntingly beautiful Indian flute.
What a great evening!
